⚙ Ideal For

  • Bathroom mirror installation
  • Vanity and cabinet mirrors
  • Retail fitting room mirrors
  • Commercial wall mirrors
  • High-humidity environments

✔ Benefits

  • Silver mirror-safe formula
  • Permanently elastic bond
  • Solvent and silicone-free
  • Gap-filling consistency
  • Odourless application

Standard construction adhesives contain solvents or silicone compounds that migrate through mirror backing coatings over time, causing dark edge staining, spotting, and irreversible corrosion known as "black edge" or "foxing." Rigid adhesive bonds cannot accommodate the thermal and structural movement in buildings, especially in bathrooms where temperature cycling is repeated, risking mirror cracking or detachment.

Würth Mirror Adhesive addresses this with a solvent-free and silicone-free chemistry that protects sensitive mirror coatings while remaining permanently elastic. The bond flexes with building movement and thermal expansion without transmitting stress into the glass, preventing damage that cannot be reversed.

Key Features

  • Certified mirror-safe chemistry —  Meets EN 1036 and DIN 1238 standards for silver mirror installation. Solvent-free and silicone-free formulation prevents chemical migration that causes dark spots, ghosting, and corrosion on mirror backing.
  • Permanently elastic bond — Remains flexible after full curing to absorb building vibrations, structural movement, and thermal expansion without cracking or allowing mirror detachment.
  • Wide substrate compatibility — Adheres reliably to structural plaster, raw concrete, timber, particle board, gypsum plasterboard, and Styrofoam without primer on most surfaces.
  • Gap-filling consistency — Thick, heavy-body formula bridges surface unevenness and minor voids, allowing level installations on textured or imperfect walls without extensive preparation.
  • Odourless formula — Completely free of aggressive solvents, making it safe and comfortable to use in enclosed bathrooms, occupied rooms, and poorly ventilated spaces.

Description

Würth Mirror Adhesive is a specialist mounting adhesive engineered for the safe installation of silver mirrors in domestic and commercial settings. The neutral polymer chemistry protects mirror backing coatings from chemical damage while providing permanent elasticity to accommodate building movement and temperature changes. Compliance with EN 1036 and DIN 1238 standards ensures suitability for critical mirror applications where backing protection is essential.

Why Standard Adhesives Damage Silver Mirrors

Silver mirror backing is chemically vulnerable to solvent and silicone migration. Many general-purpose construction adhesives contain compounds that migrate through the backing layer over time, causing dark edge staining and spotting known as "black edge" or "foxing." Once this damage occurs it cannot be reversed. Using a solvent-free and silicone-free adhesive from the outset is the only reliable way to prevent it.

The Case for Permanent Elasticity

A rigid adhesive bond may hold initially, but glass and building substrates expand and contract at different rates as temperatures change. In bathrooms, repeated cycles of steam and cold air compound this movement. A permanently elastic adhesive flexes with these movements rather than transmitting stress into the glass panel, reducing the risk of cracking or sudden detachment. This is particularly relevant for larger mirrors where the forces involved are proportionally greater.

Suitable Applications

The adhesive is appropriate for bathroom mirrors, vanity installations, retail fitting rooms, gym and leisure facility wall mirrors, and decorative domestic mirror installations. It performs in high-humidity environments and resists indoor moisture and dampness without bond degradation over time.

Application Requirements

The 290ml cartridge is applied using a standard mastic gun with adhesive dispensed in parallel vertical beads spaced approximately 10cm apart. This spacing allows air circulation behind the mirror during curing. Closed loops, horizontal lines, and dot patterns should be avoided as these restrict ventilation and lead to uneven curing. Mirrors should be pressed into place within 5 to 10 minutes of bead application.

Temperature and Humidity Considerations

The adhesive must be applied within 5°C to 30°C and remains effective from -35°C to +90°C when cured. Adequate ventilation behind the mirror during the curing period is essential for proper bond development. Curing progresses at approximately 1.5 to 2mm per 24 hours.

More Information

Application Instructions

  1. Prepare the substrate — Ensure the wall is clean, dry, structurally sound, and free from dust, grease, loose paint, or crumbling plaster. Remove any unstable surface material before applying adhesive.
  2. Load the cartridge — Insert the 290ml cartridge into a standard mastic gun. Cut the nozzle tip to produce a bead of approximately 6 to 8mm.
  3. Apply adhesive beads — Dispense the adhesive onto the back of the mirror or onto the wall surface in straight, vertical beads spaced approximately 10cm apart. Do not apply in closed loops, dots, or horizontal lines, as these restrict airflow needed for proper curing.
  4. Position the mirror — Press the mirror firmly and evenly into position within 5 to 10 minutes of adhesive application. Adjust alignment before the adhesive begins to set.
  5. Provide temporary support — For mirrors 6mm thick or greater, or on walls that are out of plumb, fit temporary mechanical support such as base brackets or heavy-duty masking tape to carry the weight while adhesive cures fully.
  6. Allow full curing — Curing progresses at approximately 1.5 to 2mm per 24 hours. Do not remove temporary support until the adhesive has fully cured throughout the bond line.
  7. Ventilation during cure — Ensure adequate ventilation behind the mirror during the entire curing period to allow air circulation and uniform cure development.

Safety note: Apply only within the recommended temperature range of 5°C to 30°C. Ensure adequate ventilation behind the mirror during curing. For large or heavy mirrors, mechanical support is strongly recommended until the bond is fully cured.

FAQs

Why do I need a specialist mirror adhesive instead of standard construction adhesive?

Standard adhesives contain solvents or silicone that migrate through mirror backing coatings and cause permanent dark staining and corrosion known as "black edge" or "foxing." Würth Mirror Adhesive is solvent-free and silicone-free to prevent this irreversible damage.

Can I use this adhesive on all wall types?

This adhesive works on structural plaster, raw concrete, timber, particle board, gypsum plasterboard, and Styrofoam. For other wall types or uncertain substrates, test on a small area first or consult the manufacturer.

Do I need to use temporary support while the adhesive cures?

For mirrors 6mm thick or thicker, or on walls that are noticeably out of plumb, temporary mechanical support such as base brackets or heavy-duty masking tape is strongly recommended to carry the weight while the adhesive cures fully. Curing progresses at approximately 1.5 to 2mm per 24 hours.

Why should I apply adhesive in vertical beads instead of other patterns?

Vertical beads spaced approximately 10cm apart allow air to circulate behind the mirror during curing, ensuring uniform and complete bond development. Closed loops, dots, or horizontal lines restrict ventilation and lead to uneven curing and weak spots in the adhesive line.
