Bilt Hamber Auto-Clay is a technically advanced automotive decontamination media designed to restore the factory-smooth finish of vehicle paintwork. Over time, paint films become impregnated with metallic debris, such as brake dust and industrial fallout, which oxidise and bond to the surface. These particles create a gritty texture and can lead to premature degradation of the paint film if not removed. The Auto-Clay bar mechanically shears these contaminants away from the surface without the use of harsh chemicals, lifting road film and stubborn particulates that hinder the visual clarity and tactile smoothness of the finish.

Temperature and Condition Grading

The effectiveness of a clay bar is significantly influenced by ambient temperature and the hardness of the clay media. To ensure optimal performance across all environments, the range is offered in three grades. The Regular grade is the firmest, designed for heavily contaminated vehicles that have never undergone clay treatment, and it maintains its structural integrity during high summer temperatures. The Medium grade offers a balance of workability and aggressive cleaning, ideal for paintwork in reasonable condition. The Soft grade is specifically formulated for frequent maintenance, delicate finishes, or use in cold winter conditions where firmer clays would become too rigid to manipulate safely.

Water-Based Lubrication System

Unlike many clay products that require surfactant-heavy detailing sprays, Auto-Clay is chemically engineered to remain stable and effective when used solely with tap water. This ensures a low-friction interface between the clay and the paintwork, allowing the bar to glide like an ice hockey puck across the surface. This water-only requirement significantly reduces the cost per application and prevents potential chemical interference with the paint's underlying structure or any pre-applied cleaners.

Structural Integrity and Value

The composition of these bars is focused durability and cost-effectiveness. The material is designed to be folded and kneaded repeatedly to expose a fresh working surface, extending the service life of a single 200g bar across multiple vehicles. By removing surface obstructions, the bar ensures that subsequent stages of paint care, such as the application of Bilt Hamber Cleanser-Polish or Finis-Wax, progress with greater ease and provide a superior aesthetic result.

Application Instructions

  1. Thoroughly wash and dry the vehicle to remove all loose surface dirt and grit before commencing the claying process.
  2. Ensure the vehicle is positioned out of direct sunlight and the panels are cool to the touch.
  3. If the paintwork is heavily contaminated with metallic particles, pre-treat the surface with a fallout remover such as Bilt Hamber Korrosol to prolong the life of the claybar.
  4. Using a plant mister or spray bottle, apply a fine mist of clean tap water to a section of approximately 2-3 square feet.
  5. Glide the Auto-Clay bar back and forth across the wetted area using light pressure.
  6. Monitor the audible feedback; a gritty sound indicates the removal of contaminants, which will subside as the surface becomes smooth.
  7. Periodically check the face of the clay bar for soiled residue; fold and knead the bar to reveal a clean surface as required.
  8. Once the area is smooth to the touch, wipe away any residual moisture with a clean microfibre or terrycloth towel
  9. Discard the clay bar immediately if it is dropped on the ground, as it will pick up abrasive grit that can damage paintwork.
  10. Apply a high-quality wax or sealant immediately after the process is complete to protect the newly exposed paint pores.
