Description
Galvanised Structure Maintenance and Touch-Up Challenges
Hot-dip galvanised structures provide decades of protection through zinc sacrificial action. However, welding, fabrication, handling, and maintenance create bare steel exposure and cut ends requiring touch-up protection. Traditional touch-up products often mismatch colour, compromise adhesion, or provide inadequate corrosion protection. ZG-90 addresses this challenge through formulation specifically engineered for galvanised applications—silver version colour-matches galvanised surfaces, whilst zinc phosphate chemistry provides corrosion protection equivalent to the original galvanising.
Welded Joint and Cut End Protection
Welding burns off protective galvanising from joints and heat-affected zones; fabrication cuts expose bare steel at component edges. These exposed areas immediately begin rusting without protection. ZG-90's rapid-drying formulation enables immediate post-weld application, protecting freshly exposed surfaces within minutes of welding completion. The zinc-enriched chemistry provides corrosion protection specifically addressing the chemistry of freshly exposed steel in harsh environments.
Fastener and Threaded Bar Touch-Up Capability
Bolted connections often require replacement bolts, studs, or threaded bar installation. Re-plating or galvanising individual fasteners is expensive and time-consuming. ZG-90 enables on-site protection of replacement fasteners through spray application. The silver version matches existing galvanised bolts on girders and steel sections, eliminating the need for costly re-plating whilst providing equivalent long-term protection.
RAL Colour Variants for Facility Organisation
Industrial and utility facilities use standardised colour coding for safety and operational management—black for non-flammable liquids, red for fire-fighting equipment, blue for air systems, yellow for gas and liquified gas, green for water, white for general use. ZG-90's RAL colour options enable colour-coded identification during facility maintenance and restoration. This standardisation simplifies equipment identification and safety protocols across diverse installations.
Crossrail Approval for Infrastructure Specification
ZG-90 Silver holds Crossrail approval (#CRL-MCR-004850), meeting rigorous infrastructure specifications for major transit projects. This third-party validation provides confidence in performance and compatibility with demanding infrastructure applications where performance specifications are non-negotiable.
Complementary Product Integration for Enhanced Protection
For maximum anti-corrosion performance, ZG-90 integrates with MZ-90 (maximum zinc coating) providing cathodic protection for extreme environments. TF-90 (fast-drying degreaser) enables rapid surface preparation prior to ZG-90 application. This product ecosystem simplifies workflow—surface preparation, maximum protection base coat, and finish coat available from a single product family.

Application Instructions
Use in well-ventilated area. Ensure adequate ventilation during application to manage solvent vapours.
Remove rust and scale with wire brush. Use a wire brush to remove loose rust, scale, and flaking material from surfaces requiring coating.
Ensure surface is clean, dry, and grease-free. Wipe surfaces clean; apply coating only to dry, degreased substrate.
Shake the aerosol can vigorously. ZG-90 contains solids that settle during storage; shake vigorously until agitator ball is free, then continue shaking for one additional minute.
Shake periodically during application. Continue shaking throughout application to maintain pigment uniformity and colour consistency.
Apply light, even coats from 15–20 cm distance. Maintain consistent distance and use 2–3 light coats rather than one heavy coat for optimal results.
Allow 15–20 minutes between coats. Additional coats can be applied after brief drying interval.
Inspect for complete coverage. After each coat, verify complete coverage with no missed areas or thin spots.
Clear aerosol valve after use. Turn can upside down and spray briefly until only propellant escapes, preventing paint blockage.
Allow full drying before stress exposure. Touch-dry times vary (2–20 minutes); allow longer for full cure before subjecting to stress or harsh conditions.
For tin product, firmly reseal after use. Ensure tight resealing to prevent skinning and maintain product quality.
Remove prior to welding if re-welding required. Strip ZG-90 before re-welding, then reapply after welding completion for protection.

FAQs
Should I use ZG-90 Silver for galvanised touch-up, or the RAL colour variants, and what's the functional difference?
ZG-90 Silver is specifically formulated for galvanised structure touch-up—the silver colour precisely matches newly hot-dip galvanised steel. Use Silver for protecting galvanised components where colour matching to existing galvanising is important. RAL colour variants (black, red, blue, yellow, green, white) are primarily for facility identification and colour-coded equipment marking. Both versions provide equivalent corrosion protection; colour choice depends on whether you're matching galvanised appearance or applying standardised facility colour coding.
Can I apply ZG-90 immediately after welding, or must I wait for cooling and surface preparation?
Allow brief cooling (typically 5–10 minutes) after welding before ZG-90 application. The surface doesn't need to be cold, but excessive heat can affect paint flow and adhesion. Once cooled enough to touch safely, apply ZG-90 immediately to protect the freshly welded joint. This rapid application is a key advantage—ZG-90's fast-drying formulation enables immediate protection without extended surface cooling time.
Are the silver and RAL colour versions identical except for colour, or are there performance differences?
Both versions are 2-in-1 primer/topcoat with identical zinc phosphate corrosion protection. The primary difference is drying time—silver version touch-dries in 2 minutes, RAL colours in 20 minutes. Maximum temperature resistance also differs: silver maintains 150°C, colours 80°C. For typical industrial applications at moderate temperatures, both perform equivalently. Choose based on colour matching requirements (silver for galvanised, colours for identification coding).
Do I need to use MZ-90 with ZG-90, or is ZG-90 sufficient for long-term corrosion protection?
ZG-90 provides professional-grade corrosion protection suitable for most applications. For maximum protection in extreme environments (coastal, chemical exposure, critical infrastructure), MZ-90 base coat followed by ZG-90 topcoat provides cathodic protection equivalent to hot-dip galvanising. For standard industrial applications, ZG-90 alone is sufficient; MZ-90 is complementary for enhanced protection where extreme durability is critical.
