Action Can RX-90 Red Oxide Anti-Rust Primer
Action Can RX-90 is a fast-drying red oxide anti-rust primer engineered for protective coating on ferrous metals and bare steel. The epoxy-modified alkyd resin with anti-corrosion pigments and zinc complexes provides superior rust protection whilst delivering excellent adhesion to degreased and rusty surfaces. Weldable and paintable with one-component paints after 1 hour, RX-90 serves structural steel, agricultural machinery, outdoor fixtures, and industrial MRO applications.
Key Features
- Fast Drying Performance — Touch-dry in 30 minutes enables rapid workflow progression; topcoat application possible after just 1 hour.
- Excellent Rusty Surface Adhesion — Formulated to adhere to rusty surfaces without requiring complete rust removal, expediting surface preparation and reducing labour.
- Modified Alkyd Resin Binder — Epoxy-modified alkyd chemistry provides durability and chemical resistance superior to standard alkyds.
- Anti-Corrosion Pigments and Zinc Complexes — Multi-layer protection through both pigment chemistry and zinc sacrificial protection against rust.
- Weldable Through — Can be welded through without coating removal or degradation, enabling fabrication workflows without stripping and re-coating.
Description
Ferrous Metal Rust Prevention Through Primer Technology
Bare steel and ferrous metals exposed to outdoor conditions rapidly develop rust without protective coating. Traditional approaches require extensive surface preparation—rust removal, grinding, solvent cleaning—adding significant labour and cost. RX-90 addresses this challenge through primer formulation specifically engineered to adhere to imperfect, rusty surfaces whilst providing rust protection during the critical initial exposure period.
Rusty Surface Adhesion and Preparation Simplification
Most primers require bare metal surfaces; rust presence is considered coating failure. RX-90 exhibits strong adhesion to rusty surfaces, eliminating the labour-intensive rust removal that traditional primers demand. This practical formulation reduces preparation time and cost whilst still providing effective protection. The primer actively protects rusty areas whilst providing secure base for subsequent topcoats.
Anti-Corrosion Pigment Chemistry and Zinc Complexes
RX-90 combines two protection mechanisms—barrier protection (the coating blocks moisture and oxygen) and active corrosion inhibition (anti-corrosion pigments and zinc complexes actively prevent rust formation). The zinc component provides sacrificial protection similar to galvanising—zinc corrodes preferentially to protect the underlying steel. This dual-mechanism approach provides superior protection compared to barrier coatings alone.
Epoxy-Modified Alkyd Chemistry for Durability
Standard alkyd primers offer basic protection but limited durability in harsh outdoor conditions. The epoxy modification enhances chemical resistance, weather resistance, and adhesion. This advanced binder chemistry extends coating life and protection capability, particularly valuable for structural steel and machinery exposed to industrial environments.
Rapid Drying for Operational Efficiency
Extended drying times delay topcoat application and extend project timelines. RX-90's 30-minute touch-dry time enables rapid workflow—primer application and 1-hour wait permits topcoat application same day. This rapid progression reduces project duration and allows faster equipment return to service.
Weldability for Fabrication Integration
Welding typically requires coating removal pre-weld and re-coating post-weld. RX-90's weldability eliminates this requirement—fabrication can proceed with the primer in place. Welded areas require spot touch-ups but don't demand complete re-coating, dramatically reducing fabrication complexity and cost.

Application Instructions
Use in well-ventilated area. Ensure adequate ventilation during application to manage solvent vapours.
Remove safety ring from aerosol button. RX-90 has a safety ring under the button; lever it out using a flat-headed screwdriver before use.
Remove rust and scale with wire brush. Use a wire brush to remove loose rust, scale, and flaking material—heavy corrosion can remain.
Ensure surface is clean, dry, and grease-free. Wipe with a clean cloth to remove dirt; apply only to dry surfaces free from grease or oil.
Shake the can vigorously. RX-90 contains solids that settle during storage; shake vigorously until the agitator ball is free.
Continue shaking for one additional minute. Extended shaking ensures uniform pigment distribution and colour consistency.
Shake periodically during application. Continue shaking the can periodically throughout application to maintain pigment uniformity.
Apply light, even coats from 20 cm distance. Hold the can approximately 20 cm from the surface; use 2 light coats rather than one heavy coat.
Maintain consistent application technique. Apply with smooth, even motions; avoid runs, drips, or heavy accumulation.
Allow 15–20 minutes between coats. Additional coats can be applied after brief drying time; build protection through multiple light layers.
Inspect for complete coverage. After each coat, verify complete coverage with no missed areas, thin spots, or bare metal visibility.
Apply topcoat after 1 hour if desired. Once touch-dry (30 minutes), topcoat can be applied; wait minimum 1 hour for full primer set.
Clean the aerosol valve after use. Turn the can upside down and spray until only propellant escapes, clearing valve of primer residue.
Allow full curing before service. Although touch-dry at 30 minutes, allow full 16-hour cure at 23°C before exposing to harsh conditions.

FAQs
Can RX-90 be applied directly to rusty surfaces, or must rust be completely removed before application?
RX-90 is specifically engineered for excellent adhesion to rusty surfaces—complete rust removal is not required. Use a wire brush to remove loose scale and flaking material, but heavy corrosion can remain. The primer actively protects rusty areas whilst providing base for topcoats. This practical approach eliminates labour-intensive rust removal, saving time and cost whilst still providing effective protection.
How soon after RX-90 application can I apply topcoats, and what paints are compatible?
Touch-dry time is 30 minutes; topcoat can be applied after 1 hour minimum. RX-90 is paintable with all one-component paints—acrylics, alkyds, and other standard industrial paints. Allow full 16-hour cure at 23°C before exposing to harsh conditions. For optimal results, apply topcoat whilst primer is still tacky (within several hours); very old primers may require light sanding before topcoat.
Can RX-90 be used as a standalone protective coating, or must it be topcoated?
RX-90 functions as both primer and protective coating. For indoor or low-exposure conditions, it provides standalone protection without topcoating. However, for outdoor or harsh conditions, topcoating provides additional weather and UV protection, extending total coating life. Topcoating is recommended for maximum durability; standalone application is acceptable for moderate-exposure situations.
What's the temperature performance of RX-90, and can it be used on equipment that reaches high temperatures?
RX-90 maintains properties to 110°C maximum—suitable for most industrial equipment but not for extreme-temperature applications like furnaces or hot-running machinery. For equipment operating above 110°C, specialist high-temperature primers are required. The 5°C minimum application temperature enables use in cool conditions, though drying is faster at higher temperatures.
