Action Can RP-90 Penetrating Oil

Action Can RP-90 is a professional-grade penetrating oil engineered for rapid release of seized, corroded, and heat-locked fasteners. The formulation with MoS₂ ("moly") provides exceptional penetrating power whilst creating long-lasting lubricating film that protects against rust and facilitates smooth reassembly. Silicone-free and safe on metals, plastics, paint, and rubber, RP-90 rapidly releases nuts, bolts, screws, studs, valves, and machine parts seized through corrosion, heat, or over-tightening.

Key Features

  • Rapid Penetration Action — Exceptional penetrating power seeps through rust and corrosion layers, reaching the fastener-metal interface within 4-5 minutes.
  • MoS2 Moly Enhancement — Molybdenum disulphide dry-film lubricant provides superior wear prevention and allows smooth, easy reassembly after fastener release.
  • Fast Seizure Release — Loosens surface rust and flash rusting quickly, enabling fastener release with minimum force and tool stress.
  • Long-Lasting Lubricant Film — Creates strong, durable lubricating coating protecting against future corrosion and seizure, extending component life.
  • Silicone-Free Safety — Absence of silicone eliminates contamination concerns with subsequent welding, painting, or coating processes.

Description

Fastener Seizure and Corrosion-Induced Locking

Seized fasteners represent a pervasive industrial problem—corrosion creates chemical bonds between the fastener and surrounding material that resist conventional removal. Heat cycling, over-tightening, and environmental exposure compound the problem. Traditional penetrating oils require extended soaking; industrial operations need rapid solutions. RP-90 addresses this challenge through formulation optimised for rapid corrosion dissolution and fast fastener release.

Penetrating Oil Chemistry and Rust Breakdown

Standard oils rely on viscous penetration—gradually seeping under rust layers through molecular diffusion. RP-90's chemistry accelerates this penetration through surfactant action that actively breaks down rust adhesion. Within 4–5 minutes, the oil reaches the fastener-metal interface, attacking corrosion from within rather than externally. This rapid action translates to faster fastener release and reduced downtime.

MoS₂ Dry-Film Lubrication for Smooth Reassembly

Once a fastener is released, re-assembly requires lubrication to prevent re-seizure. Traditional penetrating oils evaporate or wash away, leaving fasteners dry and prone to re-seizing. RP-90's MoS₂ content creates a dry-film lubricant that persists long after the oil carrier evaporates. This solid lubricant provides superior wear prevention, reduces re-assembly torque, and protects the fastener-metal interface from future corrosion bonding.

Rust and Corrosion Surface Protection

Beyond fastener release, RP-90 protects all treated surfaces against rust and corrosion. The lubricating film excludes moisture and oxygen, preventing flash rusting that would otherwise immediately re-corrode freshly exposed surfaces. This protective action is particularly valuable for components in humid or coastal environments where rapid re-corrosion is a concern.

Silicone-Free Formulation for Downstream Compatibility

Many penetrating oils contain silicone, which interferes with welding, painting, and coating processes. Silicone contamination requires additional cleaning before downstream work can proceed. RP-90's silicone-free formulation eliminates this concern—fasteners proceed directly to assembly, welding, or coating without additional preparation or cleaning steps.

Carbon Deposit Softening and Tool Cleaning

Beyond fastener release, RP-90 softens and removes carbon deposits accumulated on moulds, dies, and heavy tools. The penetrating action dissolves carbon buildup that normally resists removal, making components cleaner and easier to handle. This multipurpose capability extends RP-90's value beyond fastener applications into general industrial maintenance.

More Information

Application Instructions

Shake the aerosol can well before use. Mix thoroughly to ensure uniform oil consistency and MoS₂ distribution.

Apply RP-90 to the seized fastener. Spray the penetrating oil liberally onto the fastener, rust, and surrounding corrosion.

Allow 4–5 minutes for penetration. Let the oil seep into corrosion layers and reach the fastener-metal interface—this dwell time is essential for effectiveness.

Gently tighten the fixing slightly. Apply minimal torque to fracture corrosion bonds without forcing or tool breakage—gentle pressure works better than aggressive force.

Re-apply RP-90 after initial tightening attempt. If the fastener remains locked, spray additional RP-90 and allow another 2–3 minutes penetration.

Smoothly and gently unscrew the fastener. Apply steady, gradually increasing force rather than shock loads—smooth, deliberate pressure prevents tool damage and fastener stripping.

Use minimum force required for release. Avoid excessive force that would strip threads or damage fastener heads—patient, gentle technique is more effective than aggressive removal.

Repeat application if necessary. For extremely seized fasteners, multiple application-penetration cycles may be required; each cycle allows additional corrosion dissolution.

Allow recently released fasteners to rest briefly. After extended removal efforts, a short rest allows internal corrosion softening before renewed release attempts.

Inspect the released fastener for damage. Once removed, examine threads and fastener head for stripping, cracking, or deformation from removal process.

Apply fresh RP-90 before re-assembly. Prior to re-assembly, apply new RP-90 to threads and fastener surfaces to ensure MoS₂ protection and smooth re-assembly.

Clean excess oil before re-assembly if needed. Although RP-90 is compatible with most surfaces, wipe away excess if cleanliness is critical before assembly.

FAQs

How long should I wait after applying RP-90 before attempting to release a seized fastener?

Allow exactly 4–5 minutes for optimal penetration. This dwell time allows the oil to seep through rust layers and reach the fastener-metal interface where corrosion bonds form. After 4–5 minutes, gently tighten the fastener slightly to fracture corrosion bonds. If the fastener remains locked, apply additional RP-90 and allow 2–3 minutes penetration before renewed release attempts.

What's the difference between RP-90 and standard penetrating oils, and why is MoS₂ ("moly") beneficial?

RP-90 contains MoS₂ (molybdenum disulphide), a dry-film lubricant that creates long-lasting protection beyond the oil carrier. Standard penetrating oils evaporate or wash away, leaving fasteners dry and prone to re-seizure. RP-90's MoS₂ persists, providing smooth reassembly, preventing re-seizure, and protecting the fastener-metal interface from future corrosion. The solid lubricant film is more durable than liquid oil alone.

Can RP-90 be used on fasteners that will be welded or painted after release, or does it interfere with these processes?

RP-90's silicone-free formulation eliminates the primary contamination concern. However, for welding, it's good practice to wipe away excess oil before the welding process—the lubricating film won't interfere with welding, but clean surfaces enable cleaner welds. For painting, dried RP-90 residue can be left; the film won't interfere with paint adhesion. Always verify specific process requirements if uncertain.

How many times can I apply RP-90 to an extremely seized fastener before alternative removal methods are needed?

Multiple application cycles are acceptable and often necessary for extremely seized fasteners. Apply RP-90, allow 4–5 minutes penetration, attempt gentle release, and repeat as needed. Typically, 2–3 cycles break most severe seizures. If after three cycles the fastener remains completely immobile, mechanical removal methods (drilling, cutting, heating) may be necessary. However, patience with multiple penetration cycles succeeds in most cases.
