Description

Metal Cutting Tribological Challenges

Metal cutting generates extreme friction and heat at the tool-workpiece interface—temperatures reaching 600°C+ accelerate tool wear and workpiece material softening. Inadequate lubrication causes seizing where workpiece material bonds to the tool, creating catastrophic failure and surface damage. CT-90's formulation addresses these challenges through chemistry engineered for extreme-pressure metalworking environments.

Extreme-Pressure Additive Chemistry for Tribological Protection

Standard oils provide viscous lubrication; EP additives provide chemical protection at the molecular level. Under extreme cutting pressures, EP molecules chemically bond to metal surfaces, creating anti-wear films that prevent direct tool-metal contact. This active film protection is essential for tough metals like stainless steel and Nimonic alloys that resist conventional lubrication.

Heat Dissipation for Thermal Stability

Cutting heat reduces tool strength and accelerates wear exponentially. CT-90's formulation actively absorbs and dissipates this heat, maintaining cooler tool and workpiece temperatures. This thermal management extends tool life dramatically—tests show 2-3x tool life improvements with proper CT-90 application compared to cutting without lubrication.

Swarf Management for Operational Efficiency

Metal chips and swarf (metal fines) accumulate at cutting interfaces, interfering with fresh lubrication and creating visibility challenges. CT-90's chemistry modifies swarf characteristics, allowing it to break away cleanly rather than building up. This cleaner operation improves visibility, reduces tool clogging, and enables longer continuous cutting cycles.

Application Versatility Across Operation Types

Drilling requires different lubrication delivery than tapping; thread cutting differs from reaming. CT-90's formulation performs effectively across all these operations whilst being available in three formats—aerosol for precision control, liquid for flood lubrication, and compound for manual application. This versatility eliminates the need for multiple products.

Stainless Steel and Tough Metal Specialisation

Stainless steel and high-tensile alloys present extreme cutting challenges—high work-hardening rates, low thermal conductivity, high adhesion to tools. CT-90 is formulated specifically for these materials, with EP additives targeted to the chemical characteristics of difficult alloys.

Application Instructions

Application Instructions

  1. Select appropriate CT-90 format for the operation. Choose aerosol for precision work, liquid for flood lubrication, or compound for manual application based on cutting operation type.
  2. Prepare the workpiece and cutting tool. Ensure workpiece is securely clamped and cutting tool is sharp and properly positioned.

For Aerosol Application:

  1. Gently shake the aerosol can. Mix the lubricant thoroughly to ensure uniform formulation distribution.
  2. Hold the can in upright position. Maintain vertical orientation for optimal spray consistency.
  3. Apply to the cutting tool before operation begins. Spray a light, even coating onto the tool surface and cutting edges.
  4. Begin the cutting operation at low speed. Start the machine and allow initial contact between tool and workpiece.
  5. Apply additional lubricant to the workpiece during cutting. Spray CT-90 onto the workpiece surface during the cutting operation, maintaining contact between lubrication and cutting interface.
  6. Maintain continuous lubrication through the operation. Apply additional CT-90 as needed throughout the cutting cycle.
  7. Exercise caution near moving parts. Avoid spraying directly into rotating machinery where the spray could be deflected.

For Liquid Application (Bottle or Bulk Can):

  1. Apply CT-90 fluid before cutting begins. Pour or squeeze a generous amount onto the cutting tool and workpiece.
  2. Apply additional lubricant during the cutting operation. Reapply as needed to maintain continuous lubrication during cutting.
  3. Monitor lubricant level and replenish. Maintain adequate lubrication by adding CT-90 as the original application is depleted through cutting action.

For Compound Application:

  1. Apply by brush to the workpiece. Use a brush to apply CT-90 compound directly to the area requiring lubrication.
  2. Dip cutting tool or bit into the compound. For smaller tools or bits, dip directly into the compound for complete coverage.
  3. Ensure complete coverage of cutting edges. Apply additional compound if initial coverage appears inadequate.

For All Application Methods:

  1. Monitor cutting performance and quality. Observe cutting speed, surface finish, and heat generation to assess lubrication effectiveness.
  2. Increase application if cutting becomes difficult. If resistance increases or surface finish degrades, apply additional CT-90.
  3. Allow cutting fluids to drain from workpiece. Once cutting is complete, allow CT-90 to drain away before removing the workpiece.
  4. Clean the workpiece and tool after completion. Remove excess cutting fluid and metal chips with appropriate solvents or cloths.
  5. Inspect the tool for wear. After the operation, examine the cutting tool for wear, chipping, or deformation to assess tool condition.

FAQs

Which CT-90 format should I use for my specific cutting operation?

Aerosol spray is ideal for precision work and hard-to-reach areas, providing precise application control. Liquid in bottles suits moderate-volume operations requiring flexibility and easy application. Bulk liquid cans serve high-volume operations using flood lubrication. Compound paste is best for manual application to tools or for operations where controlled, thick application is preferred. Choose based on your operation type and volume requirements.

How much improvement in tool life and cutting speed can I expect from using CT-90?

Improvements vary based on metal type, tool material, and cutting parameters, but typical results include 2-3x tool life extension and 20-40% cutting speed increases. Tougher metals like stainless steel and Nimonic alloys show larger improvements. Surface finish also improves significantly—measured reductions in surface roughness are typical. Actual results depend on proper application and operation technique.

Will CT-90 cause staining on brass or copper components?

CT-90 may cause staining on some yellow metals (brass and copper). If staining is a concern, test CT-90 on an inconspicuous area first. If staining occurs, clean the affected area immediately after cutting. For critical applications where brass or copper appearance must be preserved, consider alternative cutting fluids or protective masking of non-cutting surfaces.

Can I mix CT-90 formats, or should I stick to one type for a given operation?

CT-90 formats are compatible and based on the same formulation—aerosol, liquid, and compound can be used interchangeably depending on convenience and operation type. However, avoid mixing with other manufacturers' cutting fluids as formulation differences may reduce effectiveness. For optimal results, use CT-90 exclusively from a single supplier.
