3M Scotchfil Electrical Insulation Putty
3M Scotchfill is a premium electrical-grade insulation putty engineered for low-voltage conductor protection where irregular geometry or complex connection configurations prevent tape application alone. The soft, pliable mastic formulation is hand-mouldable—simply finger-press into shape around irregular conductor joints, connections, or terminations. Self-sticking and self-amalgamating properties eliminate the need for external adhesive; the material bonds directly to conductors and itself. When overwrapped with 3M Scotch Super 33+ or Super 88 electrical tape, Scotchfill achieves UL recognition providing professional-grade 600V insulation protection up to 80°C.
Key Features
- Hand-Mouldable Soft Pliability — Formulated specifically for finger-moulding without tools, enabling quick shaping around complex geometries and irregular conductor configurations.
- Self-Sticking and Self-Amalgamating — Adhesive surface bonds directly to conductors and to itself without external adhesive, simplifying application and reducing material requirements.
- Exceptional Elongation Capability — 1000% elongation allows stretching over irregular shapes, thick connections, and multi-conductor junctions without material failure.
- Conforms to Irregular Geometry — Mastic formulation naturally conforms to non-standard shapes - splayed terminals, multi-conductor junctions, irregular clamps - where rigid insulation would fail.
- UL Recognised with Tape Overwrap — Professional-grade UL recognition when combined with Scotch tape overwrap, providing documented electrical safety compliance for safety-critical applications.
Description
Irregular Electrical Connections and Insulation Challenges
Electrical systems include diverse connection types—splayed cable terminations, multi-conductor junctions, connector bulks, irregular clamps—where traditional electrical tape cannot conform adequately. Rigid insulation materials bridge gaps and fail to provide complete coverage. Scotchfill addresses this challenge through mastic formulation that naturally conforms to irregular geometries, providing complete insulation coverage where tape alone would prove inadequate.
Hand Application Simplicity and Speed
Traditional conductor insulation requires tools and technical skill—measuring, cutting, wrapping, tensioning. Scotchfill simplifies this process—simply remove from the roll, finger-mould into position, and press firmly. This hand-application simplicity is particularly valuable for field repairs, emergency work, or maintenance situations where tools and materials may be limited. The quick application process reduces labour time and simplifies training requirements.
Self-Amalgamating Bond for Permanent Adhesion
External adhesives complicate application and introduce failure points—adhesive must be applied separately, coordination between materials is required, incomplete coverage creates weak bonds. Scotchfill's self-sticking surface eliminates this complexity—the material adheres directly to conductors and to itself, creating permanent bonds without supplementary adhesive. This self-bonding characteristic simplifies application and ensures reliable adhesion.
Mastic Flexibility for Thermal Cycling and Movement
Rigid insulation materials crack and delaminate when conductors move or expand thermally. Scotchfill's mastic formulation with 1000% elongation capability accommodates thermal expansion, conductor movement, and vibration without cracking. This flexibility is particularly valuable in applications experiencing temperature cycling or mechanical stress.
UL Recognition Path Through Tape Overwrap
Scotchfill alone provides electrical protection; however, UL recognition requires tape overwrap with 3M Scotch Super 33+ or Super 88 electrical tape. This two-layer approach combines Scotchfill's conformability with tape's robust protection—the putty fills irregular geometry, the tape provides mechanical protection and documented UL compliance. This combined approach solves challenges that neither material alone can address.
Multi-Conductor Junction Protection
Large cable terminations or multi-conductor splices create irregular bulks challenging for tape application. Scotchfill's mastic nature allows uniform coverage of complex geometry—simply mould around the junction, compress firmly, and overwrap with tape. This approach eliminates gaps and bridging that occur when tape alone wraps irregular shapes.
Self-Extinguishing Flame Resistance
The self-sticking formulation is self-extinguishing—flame does not propagate through the material. Combined with flame-retardant tape overwrap, this characteristic provides fire safety comparable to professional electrical systems. This safety feature is particularly valuable in enclosed spaces or applications where fire spread represents serious hazard.

Application Instructions
Ensure the conductor is de-energised. Safety requires power disconnection and verification before handling electrical conductors.
Clean the connection area of debris and oxidation. Use a wire brush or abrasive pad to remove corrosion and contaminants; wipe clean with dry cloth.
Inspect the connection for tightness. Verify all connector bolts are secure before insulation application—loose connections represent serious hazards.
Measure the area requiring insulation. Estimate the coverage needed based on conductor size and connection geometry.
Remove Scotchfill from the roll. Unroll approximately 15–25 cm of putty from the roll, or use pre-measured sections.
Warm the putty slightly if it's cold or stiff. Brief hand-warming improves pliability; avoid excessive heat which may damage the material.
Begin moulding at the base of the connection. Press the putty firmly against the conductor, starting at the junction point.
Stretch and mould upward over the connection. Work the putty with fingers, stretching and pressing to conform around the irregular geometry.
Build up coverage in layers if needed. For thick connections, apply multiple layers, pressing each firmly and allowing slight setting before adding the next layer.
Compress the putty firmly to activate bonding. Press thoroughly with fingers to ensure complete contact and self-amalgamating bonding.
Ensure uniform coverage with no bare areas. Verify no copper or conductor material is visible through the putty—complete coverage is essential for electrical safety.
Allow brief setting time. Wait 5–10 minutes for the self-amalgamating bond to develop before applying tape overwrap.
Overwrap with Scotch Super 33+ or Super 88 tape. Apply electrical tape over the putty-covered area, using 50% overlap between wraps and extending at least 25 mm beyond the putty on both sides.
Press the tape firmly to secure both materials. The tape provides mechanical protection and documented UL compliance when properly applied.
Allow full cure time before energising. Wait several hours or overnight if possible before restoring power.

FAQs
Can Scotchfill be used alone without tape overwrap, or is the tape absolutely required for electrical safety?
Scotchfill alone provides electrical protection and insulation capability. However, UL recognition (professional-grade compliance documentation) requires tape overwrap with Scotch Super 33+ or Super 88. For professional installations where documented compliance is essential, tape overwrap is necessary. For maintenance applications where UL documentation isn't required, Scotchfill alone may provide adequate protection—assess your specific requirements before deciding. Tape overwrap adds mechanical protection and fire resistance benefits beyond electrical insulation.
How thick should the Scotchfill layer be for adequate insulation coverage?
The mastic naturally conforms and compresses; typically 3–5 mm of compressed putty provides adequate coverage. For more substantial connections, build up in layers—apply one layer, compress firmly, then add additional layers if needed. Complete coverage with no visible conductor material is the key criterion; thickness sufficient to provide uniform coverage is appropriate. Excessive thickness provides no additional benefit; the emphasis is on uniform coverage rather than maximum thickness.
Can Scotchfill be used on connections operating at temperatures approaching the 80°C maximum?
Scotchfill is rated for sustained operation to 80°C maximum. Connections operating continuously at or near 80°C are within specification, though accelerated aging may occur at sustained temperature extremes. For connections with occasional temperature peaks to 80°C (typical industrial equipment), Scotchfill provides reliable performance. For applications with sustained operation near maximum temperature, consider specialised high-temperature alternatives or consulting 3M technical support for guidance.
Does the 1000% elongation mean the putty can be stretched indefinitely, or is there a practical limit?
The 1000% elongation rating indicates the material can stretch to 10 times its original length before breaking. In practical application, this extraordinary elongation allows stretching over irregular shapes, thick connections, and complex geometries. However, the self-amalgamating property and adhesion are optimised when the material is compressed and pressed firmly rather than excessively stretched. The elongation capability accommodates irregular geometry; normal application uses compression and moulding rather than sustained stretching.
