Description

Porous Surface Bonding Challenges

Conventional instant adhesives fail on porous materials—wood, cork, leather, cardboard—because surface porosity absorbs and disperses the adhesive, reducing effective bonding. Additionally, these materials often have acidic chemistry that interferes with standard cyanoacrylate cure mechanisms. Scotch-Weld SI Gel addresses these challenges through formulation specifically engineered for porous substrate bonding.

Surface Insensitivity Technology

Standard instant adhesives require clean, non-porous, slightly alkaline surfaces for optimal bonding. SI Gel's surface insensitivity allows bonding on surfaces that would defeat conventional adhesives—rough, contaminated, acidic, and porous substrates all bond effectively. This versatility expands adhesive applications to materials and conditions where conventional products fail.

Gel Viscosity for Gap Filling

Liquid adhesives run and drip on porous surfaces, wicking into material rather than bonding the joint. The gel consistency maintains contact at joint interfaces whilst providing thickness that fills gaps up to 0.508 mm. This controlled delivery improves bonding effectiveness on irregular surfaces compared to thinner liquid formulations.

Cardboard, Veneer, and Fabric Versatility

Packaging, woodworking, and textile repair applications involve materials that bond inconsistently with conventional adhesives. SI Gel's formulation addresses these diverse materials within a single product, simplifying inventory and enabling flexible assembly approaches across material types.

Leather and Cork Specialisation

Leather and cork present unique bonding challenges—their organic composition and porous nature challenge standard adhesives. SI Gel's chemistry is optimised specifically for these materials, enabling reliable bonding where conventional products might fail or provide inadequate durability.

Rapid Curing for Production Efficiency

6–23 second work time allows adequate positioning and alignment whilst enabling rapid cure progression. Projects complete faster than products requiring extended curing, improving production throughput and allowing quick handling of bonded assemblies.

Structural Bonding Durability

2900 psi shear strength indicates substantial load-bearing capability—suitable for structural applications beyond simple assembly. The 24-hour full cure and 82°C maximum operating temperature allow use in demanding applications requiring durable, heat-resistant bonding.

Application Instructions

Prepare bonding surfaces. Clean surfaces of dirt and loose material; light roughening of smooth surfaces improves adhesion. Unlike conventional instant adhesives, extensive surface preparation is not critical for porous materials.

Ensure surfaces are dry. Moisture interferes with cyanoacrylate cure—allow wet or damp porous materials to dry before bonding.

Dispense adhesive onto one surface. Apply a small amount of gel directly to one bonding surface—the gel thickness makes small quantities effective.

Position surfaces together. Bring bonded surfaces into alignment and apply firm pressure to seat the joint and distribute adhesive.

Hold pressure during curing. Maintain contact pressure for 60–90 seconds to allow initial set and cure to develop.

Release and allow full cure. After initial holding time, the adhesive will set sufficiently for light handling. However, allow 24 hours for full strength development before exposing to design loads.

Avoid excessive adhesive application. Use small quantities—the gel's high viscosity makes less material effective, and excess adhesive wastes product and creates cleanup challenges.

For vertical or overhead joints, provide clamping. Use clamps or fixtures to maintain alignment and pressure during the 24-hour full cure period.

Clean excess adhesive promptly. Uncured excess gel can be wiped away; cured adhesive requires mechanical removal.

Allow temperature stabilisation. Once cured, allow assemblies to stabilise at room temperature before exposure to elevated temperatures (up to 82°C maximum operating).

FAQs

Can SI Gel bond non-porous materials like plastic and metal, or is it limited to porous surfaces?

SI Gel is engineered for porous materials but also bonds non-porous surfaces effectively. Its surface insensitivity makes it versatile across diverse materials—the formulation works on plastics, metals, glass, and ceramics alongside the porous materials it's specifically optimised for. It is a true multi-material adhesive.

How long must I hold pressure on bonded surfaces before I can release them?

Hold firm contact pressure for 60–90 seconds to allow initial set. After this period, the bond is sufficiently developed for light handling. However, for maximum strength and load-bearing reliability, clamps or fixtures should maintain pressure throughout the full 24-hour cure period.

Will SI Gel work on damp or slightly wet porous materials, or must surfaces be completely dry?

Surfaces should be as dry as possible for optimal curing. Excessive moisture interferes with cyanoacrylate chemistry. However, SI Gel's surface insensitivity provides some tolerance for minor moisture compared to conventional instant adhesives. For best results, allow porous materials to dry before bonding; if slight moisture is present, the adhesive will likely still cure, but strength may be slightly reduced.

What's the maximum temperature these bonds can withstand, and can SI Gel be used in heated applications?

Maximum operating temperature is 82°C (180°F)—the bond maintains integrity up to this temperature. Beyond 82°C, the cyanoacrylate bond may degrade. For applications with elevated temperature exposure, confirm operating temperatures remain below this limit. For higher-temperature applications, epoxy adhesives would be more suitable.
