Description

Oily Metal Bonding Challenge

Traditional adhesives fail on oily metal surfaces—manufacturing oils, machining residues, and oxidation films prevent bonding. Surface deoxidation or degreasing is typically required, adding labour and complexity. Scotch-Weld DP810's formulation penetrates oily films, achieving structural adhesion on contaminated surfaces without extensive pre-treatment. This capability dramatically simplifies metalworking and manufacturing assembly processes.

Two-Part Acrylic Advantages

Two-part acrylics deliver superior strength and durability compared to single-part formulations—the hardener component enables thorough cross-linking and high-performance cure. DP810's two-part system achieves 4200 psi shear strength and tough impact resistance through complete polymerisation, providing structural-grade adhesion for demanding applications.

Non-Sag Formulation for Precision Placement

Thin adhesive formulations sag and run on vertical surfaces, creating uncontrolled bond lines and waste. DP810's non-sag consistency maintains applied position, ensuring precise adhesive placement on complex geometries, overhead surfaces, and vertical joints. This control improves bond line quality and reduces adhesive consumption.

Impact Toughening Technology

Many adhesives achieve high static strength but fail under impact or vibration through brittle fracture. DP810's toughening chemistry absorbs energy from impact and shock, preventing catastrophic failure through ductile behaviour rather than brittle fracture. This impact resistance is critical for transportation, machinery, and vibration-exposed applications.

Low-Odour Safe Work Environment

Traditional acrylic adhesives emit strong, harsh odours from volatile components. DP810's low-odour formulation eliminates these fumes, reducing ventilation requirements and improving worker comfort during extended use. The non-flammable profile additionally reduces fire hazard and storage concerns compared to solvent-based adhesives.

Diverse Substrate Versatility

DP810 bonds metals (ferrous and non-ferrous), plastics (including nylon), composites, and painted/powder-coated surfaces with a single product. This versatility eliminates the need for substrate-specific adhesives, simplifying inventory and enabling flexible assembly approaches.

Application Instructions

Prepare bonding surfaces. For oily metals, light wiping with a clean cloth is typically sufficient—extensive degreasing is not required. For painted or powder-coated surfaces, ensure good surface integrity. Roughen very smooth surfaces lightly with sandpaper if optimal adhesion is critical.

Ensure surfaces are dry. Moisture interferes with acrylic cure; allow wet surfaces to air dry or wipe with a cloth to remove excess moisture before adhesive application.

Prime surfaces if recommended. For critical applications or difficult substrates, consult 3M recommendations for optional primers that enhance adhesion on specific materials.

Mix the two-part adhesive. Dispense equal volumes of resin and hardener from the cartridge dispenser onto a disposable surface (cardboard, plastic sheet). Mix thoroughly with a stick or spreader, ensuring uniform colour and complete blending—inadequate mixing results in incomplete cure.

Apply to one bonding surface. Using a disposable stick or applicator, apply a thin, even bead of mixed adhesive to one surface. Avoid excessive application—a thin bond line (approximately 0.5–1 mm) delivers optimal strength.

Bring surfaces together. Press the bonded surfaces together firmly, holding or clamping them in alignment.

Allow initial handling strength to develop. After 20 minutes, the adhesive achieves handling strength allowing light movement or fixture removal. However, full strength development requires 8–24 hours depending on temperature and application thickness.

Provide clamping pressure during cure. Where feasible, apply clamps or fixtures to maintain alignment and pressure throughout the 8–24 hour cure period. Clamps should be removed after full cure to avoid damaging the cured adhesive.

Support heavy assemblies during cure. For vertical joints or overhead applications, provide temporary bracing to support weight during cure; the adhesive must support loads once cure is complete, but curing adhesive cannot support loads.

Allow full cure before service. Although handling strength develops in 20 minutes, allow full 8–24 hour cure before exposing the assembly to design loads or operating conditions.

Clean excess adhesive promptly. Remove uncured excess adhesive with a disposable cloth or scraper before it hardens. Cured adhesive requires mechanical removal.

Store unused adhesive properly. Store cartridges and mixed components at 0°C (32°F) to extend shelf life and maintain cure performance. Room temperature storage limits open time and can affect workability.

FAQs

Do I need to degrease oily metal surfaces before using DP810, or can I bond directly?

DP810 is formulated to bond oily metals directly without extensive degreasing. Light wiping to remove loose dirt and excess oil is typically sufficient. For exceptionally greasy or contaminated surfaces, wipe with a clean cloth before application. Extensive chemical degreasing is not required and adds unnecessary labour.

How do I know when DP810 has achieved full cure and can support design loads?

Full cure requires 8–24 hours depending on temperature and application thickness. Handling strength (20 psi) develops in 20 minutes, but structural loads should not be applied until full cure is complete. Higher temperatures accelerate cure; cooler temperatures extend curing time. When the adhesive has hardened fully and no longer deforms under moderate pressure, full cure has been achieved.

Can I use DP810 on plastic surfaces, and does it require surface preparation?

Yes. DP810 bonds effectively to most plastics including nylon, polycarbonate, and ABS without extensive surface preparation. Light roughening with sandpaper can enhance adhesion on very smooth plastics. Ensure the plastic surface is clean and dry before application—oil or dust contamination reduces adhesion even on plastics.

What's the difference between DP810 and other 3M acrylic adhesives, and why choose low-odour?

DP810 is formulated for low odour and non-flammability, reducing workplace hazards and improving worker environment quality compared to traditional acrylic adhesives. The performance (shear strength, impact resistance, work life) is comparable to standard acrylics. Choose DP810 when worker safety and environmental conditions are priorities without sacrificing adhesive performance.
