3M Scotch 1625 Special Contact Cleaner
3M Scotch 1625 Special Contact Cleaner is a spray cleaner engineered to loosen dirt, light oxide layers, and impurities from electrical contacts and precision surfaces. The electrically neutral, totally residue-free formulation maintains electrical connectivity and component integrity whilst providing gentle, effective cleaning.
Key Features
- Electrically Neutral Formulation — Safe on energised circuits and electrical components - does not conduct electricity or interfere with electrical properties.
- Totally Residue-Free — Evaporates completely without leaving film, buildup, or residue that could affect electrical conductivity or component function.
- Light Oxide Layer Removal — Effectively dissolves and removes light oxidation from contacts and connectors, restoring electrical conductivity.
- Dirt and Impurity Dissolution — Gently dissolves and removes dirt, dust, and contamination without aggressive action that could damage delicate contacts.
- Universal Environmental Suitability — Formulated for use in virtually any environment - automotive, aerospace, industrial, marine - without compatibility concerns.
Description
Electrical Contact Oxidation and Contamination Challenges
Electrical contacts—connectors, terminals, switches, relay contacts—gradually accumulate light oxidation and contamination through exposure to moisture and air. This oxidation creates contact resistance, reducing electrical conductivity and reliability. Traditional cleaners may be conductive (creating safety hazards), aggressive (damaging delicate contacts), or leave residues (reducing conductivity). Scotch 1625 addresses these challenges through chemistry engineered specifically for electrical safety and maintenance.
Electrical Neutrality for Safety
Conductive cleaners create short-circuit hazards on live circuits. Scotch 1625's electrically neutral formulation eliminates this risk—it can be safely used on de-energised circuits and near energised equipment without electrical hazard concerns. This safety profile is essential in electrical maintenance where accidental conductivity could cause catastrophic failures.
Residue-Free Evaporation for Reliability
Residue left behind by other cleaners creates insulating films that reduce conductivity, ironically causing the electrical problems cleaning is meant to solve. Scotch 1625's formulation evaporates completely, leaving only the cleaned contact surface without any film or buildup. This complete evaporation is critical for restoring electrical reliability.
Light Oxidation Dissolution Without Abrasion
Light oxide layers on copper, silver, and other contact materials require chemical dissolution rather than mechanical scrubbing that risks contact damage. Scotch 1625's chemical action dissolves oxides at the molecular level, restoring bright contact surfaces without mechanical risk or labour-intensive scrubbing.
Delicate Contact Preservation
Electrical contacts are often plated with precious metals or engineered for specific properties. Aggressive cleaners can damage plating or affect contact characteristics. Scotch 1625's gentle formulation preserves contact integrity whilst removing contamination, maintaining reliability throughout equipment service life.
Precision Instrument and Connector Versatility
Beyond automotive electrical work, Scotch 1625 is valuable for audio connectors, camera contacts, computer components, and precision instruments. The universal environmental suitability makes it suitable for diverse applications from automotive service bays to precision electronics labs.
More Information
Application Instructions
Disconnect power from electrical equipment. Always de-energise circuits before cleaning—safety requires power disconnection even though the cleaner is electrically neutral.
Identify contaminated or oxidised contacts. Locate electrical connectors, terminals, switches, or relay contacts showing oxidation, corrosion, or contamination.
Ensure adequate ventilation. Work in well-ventilated areas or outdoors; the aerosol produces vapours requiring air circulation.
Shake the canister thoroughly. Mix the contents by shaking vigorously for 10–15 seconds to ensure uniform formulation.
Spray directly onto contaminated contacts. Apply the cleaner directly to the oxidised or contaminated electrical contact from approximately 15–20 cm distance.
Allow brief penetration time. Let the cleaner work for 30–60 seconds, allowing chemical action to dissolve oxidation and loosen contamination.
Wipe with a clean, lint-free cloth. Using a lint-free cloth or paper towel, gently wipe away loosened contamination and cleaner residue.
Repeat if necessary for heavy oxidation. For stubborn oxidation, apply additional cleaner and allow longer penetration time before wiping.
Inspect for cleanliness and shine. Check the cleaned contact under bright light—contacts should appear bright and clean without oxidation or film.
Allow complete evaporation. Let any remaining moisture evaporate completely (typically 5–10 minutes) before re-energising or operating equipment.
Reconnect and test. Once drying is complete and equipment is re-energised, verify electrical operation and conductivity.

FAQs
Can I use Scotch 1625 Special Contact Cleaner on live electrical circuits, or must I disconnect power first?
Always disconnect power from electrical equipment before cleaning, even though the cleaner is electrically neutral. Electrical safety protocols require de-energisation during maintenance work. Once cleaning and drying are complete (5–10 minutes), re-energise equipment and verify operation.
Will Scotch 1625 damage precious metal plating on electrical contacts?
No. The cleaner is formulated to be safe on all contact materials including gold-plated and silver-plated contacts. The gentle chemical action dissolves oxidation without abrasive contact or harsh solvents that could damage plating. The residue-free evaporation leaves plating intact.
How does Scotch 1625 differ from general-purpose electrical degreasers or contact spray cleaners?
Scotch 1625 is engineered specifically for light oxidation removal and electrical contact restoration. Its electrically neutral, totally residue-free formulation prioritises electrical safety and conductivity restoration, whilst general-purpose degreasers may leave residue or carry electrical conductivity risks. Scotch 1625 is optimised for electrical reliability where other products may compromise performance.
Can I use Scotch 1625 on computer or audio connectors, or is it limited to automotive applications?
Scotch 1625 is suitable for any electrical contacts including computer, audio, precision instruments, and aerospace applications. The universal formulation addresses light oxidation and contamination across diverse industries and equipment types. Always de-energise equipment first regardless of application.
