3M Scotch 1600 Anti Corrosion Spray
3M Scotch 1600 Anti Corrosion Spray is a protective coating formulated with modified styrene-butadiene rubber creating a dense, abrasion-resistant barrier. The spray protects metal and vulnerable surfaces against moisture ingress, saltwater spray, corrosive agents, and physical impacts across operating temperatures to 80°C.
Key Features
- Rubber-Asphalt Base Protection ā Modified styrene-butadiene rubber formulation creates dense protective covering that bonds firmly to surfaces.
- Salt Spray and Moisture Resistance ā Engineered specifically for marine and saltwater environments, protecting against corrosive salt spray and moisture ingress.
- Abrasion Resistant Coating ā Protective film resists physical impacts and mechanical damage, maintaining protective properties through handling and service.
- Dense Barrier Formation ā Creates thick, continuous protective layer preventing corrosive agents from reaching underlying metal surfaces.
- Versatile Surface Application ā Suitable for metal components, undercarriage protection, and diverse surfaces requiring corrosion prevention in harsh environments.
Description
Marine Corrosion and Saltwater Exposure Challenges
Saltwater and marine environments accelerate corrosion through salt spray deposition and constant moisture exposure. Traditional protective coatings fail through moisture ingress, salt crystal penetration, and eventual corrosion breakthrough. Scotch 1600's rubber-asphalt formulation addresses this challenge through a dense, hydrophobic barrier that repels salt spray and moisture whilst resisting the abrasive conditions of marine environments.
Rubber-Asphalt Chemistry for Long-Term Protection
Rubber-asphalt coatings have proven durability in marine and industrial applicationsāthe elastomeric rubber component remains flexible under temperature variation and UV exposure, whilst asphalt provides hydrophobic barrier properties. This combination creates a protective film that lasts through extended service life without cracking or degradation typical of rigid protective coatings.
Dense Coverage Advantage
Many corrosion preventatives are thin films that don't block all moisture pathways. Scotch 1600's dense application creates thick protective coverage ensuring complete barrier function. This density is particularly critical for saltwater environments where even microscopic gaps can allow corrosive penetration.
Abrasion and Impact Resistance
Marine and industrial equipment experiences physical impacts that crack or flake protective coatings. Scotch 1600's elastomeric formulation flexes under impact rather than fracturing, maintaining continuous protection even through mechanical stress. This impact resistance extends coating life compared to brittle protective materials.
Undercarriage and Hidden Component Protection
Vehicle undercarriages, suspension components, and hidden areas accumulate salt spray and moisture that cause accelerated corrosion. Scotch 1600's spray application easily coats these difficult-access areas, providing comprehensive protection where brush-on products would be impractical.
Temperature Stability to 80°C
Hot-climate and high-temperature applications stress protective coatings. Scotch 1600 maintains protective properties up to 80°C, suitable for engine compartments and heat-exposed components without degradation or softening that would compromise protection.

Application Instructions
Prepare the surface for coating. Remove loose rust, corrosion, and debris through wire brushing or light abrasion; dry completely to ensure adhesion.
Ensure adequate ventilation. Work in well-ventilated areas or outdoors; the aerosol produces vapours requiring air circulation.
Shake the canister vigorously. Mix the rubber-asphalt formulation thoroughly by shaking for 15ā20 seconds to ensure uniform consistency.
Apply even, continuous coating. Spray the anti-corrosion coating directly onto the surface from approximately 15ā20 cm distance, maintaining even pressure and motion.
Build protective layer thickness. Apply sufficient coating to create a dense, continuous barrierātypically one application is sufficient, but heavy corrosion protection may benefit from multiple light coats.
Maintain consistent spray pattern. Use smooth, overlapping passes to ensure even coverage without gaps or thin areas.
Cover all vulnerable surfaces. Ensure complete coverage of all surfaces requiring protectionāincomplete coverage defeats the protective purpose.
Allow coating to cure. Once application is complete, allow the rubber-asphalt coating to cure fully (typically 24 hours) before exposing to water or normal service conditions.
Inspect for complete coverage. Check the coated surfaces under bright light to confirm complete, even coverage without bare spots or thin areas.
Avoid excess application. Thick application does not improve protection and wastes materialāconsistent, even coverage is optimal.
Reapply periodically. For critical protection or high-exposure areas, inspect annually and reapply coating if degradation is evident.

FAQs
How long does Scotch 1600 Anti Corrosion Spray protection last before reapplication?
Durability depends on environmental severity. In marine saltwater environments with constant spray exposure, annual inspection and reapplication is recommended. In milder or less-exposed conditions, 2ā3 years of protection is typical before degradation or thin spots require touch-up coating.
Can I apply Scotch 1600 over existing corrosion or rust, or must I clean the surface first?
Light surface oxidation and light corrosion can be coated over with wire brushing to remove loose material. However, heavy rust and thick corrosion should be removed first through mechanical means or rust conversion. Scotch 1600 provides protection against future corrosion on clean or light-oxide surfaces; it will not effectively protect if applied over heavy existing corrosion.
Will Scotch 1600 remain flexible in cold climates, or does it become brittle?
The elastomeric rubber-asphalt formulation remains flexible across cold temperatures, expanding and contracting with temperature swings without cracking. This flexibility is a major advantage over rigid protective coatings in climates with significant temperature variation. Scotch 1600 maintains protective integrity from arctic to hot-climate conditions.
Is Scotch 1600 suitable for fuel tank protection or internal surfaces, or only external corrosion protection?
Scotch 1600 is formulated for external corrosion protection and abrasion resistance. It is not suitable for internal tank protection or surfaces in contact with fuels or other aggressive chemicals. Use only for external protective coating of metal surfaces in marine and corrosive environments.
