3M Perfect-It Extra Fine Plus Compound
3M Perfect-It Extra Fine Plus Compound is a fine finishing compound engineered specifically for modern scratch-resistant clear coat paint systems. The award-winning colour-coded formula removes fine sanding scratches and coarser compound marks, delivering outstanding paint restoration results on 2K paint systems.
Key Features
- Fine Finishing Action — The extra-fine abrasive grain removes light scratches and compound swirl marks without requiring aggressive cutting, making it ideal for the final refinement stage.
- Modern Scratch-Resistant Clear Coat Optimisation — Engineered specifically for contemporary scratch-resistant paint systems, ensuring safe, effective performance on the hardest modern clearcoats without damaging protective characteristics.
- Removes Fine Sanding Scratches — Eliminates the fine linear marks left by high-grit sanding (P2000+) that require gentle finishing compound action.
- Removes Coarser Compound Scratches — Addresses the micro-scratches left by previous compounding stages, refining the surface for maximum gloss and clarity.
- Works as Single Polish or Two-Stage Compound — Can be used alone on lightly soiled 2K paint systems requiring minimal restoration, or as the second stage after Fast Cut Plus or XL for comprehensive defect removal.
- Award-Winning Colour-Coded System — Part of 3M's recognised colour-coded polishing process, representing engineered excellence for paint rectification work.
Description
Why Modern Clear Coats Require Specialised Finishing Compounds
Contemporary automotive clear coats, particularly scratch-resistant systems, have different chemical composition and hardness than older paint technologies. Scratch-resistant technology creates extremely hard surfaces that can be damaged by compounds not engineered specifically for them. Generic fine compounds may not work effectively on these modern systems or could potentially compromise their scratch-resistance properties. 3M engineered Extra Fine Plus specifically for these modern paint systems, ensuring safe, effective finishing without damaging protective characteristics.
Fine Abrasive Grain for Micro-Defect Removal
The extra-fine abrasive grain is calibrated to remove only the finest scratches — sanding marks from 2000+ grit paper and micro-scratches from earlier compounding stages. This fine action is gentle enough that it won't create new defects or cut into protected layers, yet effective enough to achieve complete defect removal and maximum gloss.
Single-Use Flexibility for Efficiency
Most compounds require sequential stages — fast cut, medium compound, fine compound. Extra Fine Plus offers flexibility to work alone on minimally soiled 2K systems, eliminating unnecessary stages and reducing labour time. For heavily soiled finishes, it works optimally as the final stage after more aggressive compounds.
Colour-Coded System as Professional Standard
The 3M colour-coded system (white for Extra Fine Plus) has become the professional standard in bodyshops worldwide. Colour coding simplifies product selection, eliminates guesswork, and ensures technicians use the correct compound for each defect severity level.
Award-Winning Formula Recognition
The formula's award-winning status reflects recognition of its engineering excellence. Professional organisations and bodyshop networks have validated its performance through competitive evaluation, providing objective confirmation of its quality and effectiveness.
Clear Coat Compatibility as Design Priority
The formulation prioritises clear coat protection alongside defect removal. This safety-first approach means you can achieve excellent results without the risk of compromising the paint's protective properties that newer systems are engineered to provide.

Application Instructions
- Prepare the painted surface — Ensure previous sanding or compounding stages are complete and the surface has been cleaned to remove dust and residue.
- Allow paint to cool to ambient temperature — Do not apply compound to warm surfaces. Allow adequate cooling time.
- Shake the compound bottle thoroughly — Mix Extra Fine Plus completely to ensure uniform abrasive distribution throughout the liquid.
- Select appropriate finishing pad — Use a black waffle pad (the colour-coded companion for this product) or other fine finishing pad designed for extra-fine compounds.
- Attach pad to backing plate — Secure the finishing pad to the 3M Perfect-It backing plate on your rotary or dual-action polisher.
- Apply compound to pad — Apply a small amount of Extra Fine Plus to the finishing pad. The fine compound requires minimal product for effective results.
- Spread at low speed — Start the polisher at low speed to distribute the compound evenly across the work area.
- Increase to working speed — Increase polisher speed to optimal finishing speed (typically 1000–1400 rpm for rotary, 800–1200 rpm for dual-action).
- Work with light to moderate pressure — The extra-fine formulation is effective at moderate pressure. Excessive pressure is unnecessary and increases heat generation without improving results.
- Work systematically across panels — Move methodically across the painted surface in overlapping sections, ensuring complete coverage.
- Monitor fine scratch elimination — Observe the gradual disappearance of fine scratches and compound marks under good lighting.
- Allow adequate dwell time — Give the fine compound sufficient time to work on each section, particularly on areas with visible fine scratches.
- Wipe away residue — Once finishing is complete, wipe away compound residue with a clean microfibre cloth.
- Inspect final results — Examine the finished surface under various lighting conditions to confirm fine scratch elimination and maximum gloss achievement.

FAQs
Can I use Extra Fine Plus on older paint systems, or is it modern-paint-only?
While engineered specifically for modern scratch-resistant clear coats, Extra Fine Plus is safe on older paint systems. However, older paints may not need the specialised protection that this product provides — standard fine compounds may be equally effective and more economical.
Should I use Extra Fine Plus as a single-stage product or always after aggressive compounds?
For minimally soiled 2K paint systems, Extra Fine Plus can work effectively alone, saving time and labour. For heavily soiled finishes or extensive defect removal, use it as the final stage after Fast Cut Plus or XL for comprehensive results. Choose based on defect severity.
What pad should I use with Extra Fine Plus?
Black waffle pad is the colour-coded companion pad engineered to work optimally with this compound. Other fine finishing pads may work, but the black waffle pad represents the optimised system pairing.
Why is this compound engineered specifically for scratch-resistant clear coats?
Modern scratch-resistant systems have different hardness and chemical composition than older clear coats. Generic fine compounds might not work effectively or could potentially compromise the scratch-resistance properties. This compound is formulated specifically to work safely and effectively on these modern systems.
