3M Perfect-It Extra Fine Plus Compound

1. Prepare the painted surface — Ensure previous sanding or compounding stages are complete and the surface has been cleaned to remove dust and residue.
2. Allow paint to cool to ambient temperature — Do not apply compound to warm surfaces. Allow adequate cooling time.
3. Shake the compound bottle thoroughly — Mix Extra Fine Plus completely to ensure uniform abrasive distribution throughout the liquid.
4. Select appropriate finishing pad — Use a black waffle pad (the colour-coded companion for this product) or other fine finishing pad designed for extra-fine compounds.
5. Attach pad to backing plate — Secure the finishing pad to the 3M Perfect-It backing plate on your rotary or dual-action polisher.
6. Apply compound to pad — Apply a small amount of Extra Fine Plus to the finishing pad. The fine compound requires minimal product for effective results.
7. Spread at low speed — Start the polisher at low speed to distribute the compound evenly across the work area.
8. Increase to working speed — Increase polisher speed to optimal finishing speed (typically 1000–1400 rpm for rotary, 800–1200 rpm for dual-action).
9. Work with light to moderate pressure — The extra-fine formulation is effective at moderate pressure. Excessive pressure is unnecessary and increases heat generation without improving results.
10. Work systematically across panels — Move methodically across the painted surface in overlapping sections, ensuring complete coverage.
11. Monitor fine scratch elimination — Observe the gradual disappearance of fine scratches and compound marks under good lighting.
12. Allow adequate dwell time — Give the fine compound sufficient time to work on each section, particularly on areas with visible fine scratches.
13. Wipe away residue — Once finishing is complete, wipe away compound residue with a clean microfibre cloth.
14. Inspect final results — Examine the finished surface under various lighting conditions to confirm fine scratch elimination and maximum gloss achievement.
