Prepare the damaged surface. Clean the repair area thoroughly and remove any loose material, rust, or old paint that would interfere with filler adhesion.

Roughen the surface if needed. For smooth or painted surfaces, light sanding (80–120 grit) improves filler adhesion by creating mechanical grip.

Mix the filler according to instructions. Combine the paste filler with hardener in the ratio specified on the product packaging; mix thoroughly to ensure uniform colour (off-white when fully mixed).

Determine appropriate handling time. 3M General Purpose Body Filler has a handling time of 5–6 minutes—work quickly within this window to apply and shape the filler before it begins hardening.

Apply filler to the damaged area. Using a plastic spreader or putty knife, apply the filler directly into the dented or damaged area, slightly overfilling to account for sanding back.

Spread and shape the filler. Work the filler smooth, feathering the edges to blend with the surrounding surface and creating the desired shape.

Allow curing time. Let the filler cure fully according to the product instructions—typically 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on temperature and filler thickness.

Sand the cured filler. Once fully hardened, use 80–120 grit sandpaper to shape and smooth the filler to match surrounding contours, then progress to finer grits (150–220) for a smooth finishing surface.
