3M Adhesion Promoter 4298UV
Adhesion Promoter 4298UV is a solvent-based liquid primer specifically formulated to improve 3M Acrylic Foam Tape adhesion to low surface energy plastics commonly used in automotive applications. The fluorescent dye enables coverage verification, whilst fast drying in 30–90 seconds allows rapid tape application.
Key Features
- Improves Adhesion to Low Surface Energy Plastics — Chemically enhances bond strength on TPO, TPU, PP, and other automotive plastic substrates.
- Fluorescent Dye for Coverage Verification — Built-in yellow dye makes application visible, allowing technicians to confirm complete and consistent coverage.
- Fast Drying 30-90 Seconds — Rapid drying enables quick tape application without extended wait times between preparation and assembly.
- Works with 3M Acrylic Foam and Plus Tapes — Formulated specifically for compatibility with 3M acrylic foam tape systems.
- Acetone-Cleanable Formula — Allows mistake correction by cleaning uncured promoter with acetone solvent.
Description
Low Surface Energy Plastic Adhesion Challenge
Thermoplastic olefins (TPO), thermoplastic urethanes (TPU), and polypropylene (PP) are lightweight, cost-effective automotive materials with extensive use in interior and exterior trim. However, their low surface energy creates poor adhesion for pressure-sensitive adhesives—water and oil droplets bead on the surface rather than spreading, indicating the material's resistance to wetting by adhesive systems.
Chemical Surface Modification
Adhesion Promoter 4298UV works by chemically modifying the plastic surface, increasing its surface energy and receptivity to adhesive bonding. This modification is temporary and localised to the primer layer, allowing acrylic foam tape adhesives to wet and bond properly to otherwise resistant surfaces.
Fluorescent Dye as Application Quality Control
Coverage consistency is critical—incomplete or uneven promoter application results in weak spots where tape adhesion fails. The fluorescent yellow dye makes application immediately visible, allowing technicians to confirm complete coverage before tape application. This visual verification prevents assembly failures caused by inadequate primer coverage.
Rapid Drying for Production Efficiency
Traditional primers requiring extended drying time slow production workflows. Adhesion Promoter 4298UV dries in 30–90 seconds, allowing immediate tape application without extended waiting periods or clamps holding parts in position during cure.
Multi-Surface Compatibility
Beyond TPO, TPU, and PP, the promoter works effectively on nylon, glass, ABS, acrylic, EPDM, TPV/TPE, and polycarbonate—a wide range covering most automotive trim and component materials. This versatility allows a single promoter to address diverse substrate types across interior and exterior applications.
Acetone Reversibility for Error Correction
Mistakes during application—overspray, incorrect placement, accidental coverage—can be corrected by wiping uncured promoter with acetone solvent. This reversibility reduces scrap and rework without requiring complete part replacement.
Specific Formulation for Acrylic Foam Tapes
3M formulates this promoter specifically for compatibility with its own acrylic foam tape systems, ensuring optimal chemical compatibility and bonding performance. Using Adhesion Promoter 4298UV with 3M acrylic foam tapes delivers the most reliable, predictable adhesion outcomes.
More Information
Application Instructions
Prepare the substrate surface. Clean all bonding surfaces thoroughly with appropriate cleaners to remove dirt, oils, and contamination; allow to dry completely.
Confirm temperature conditions. Ensure the application environment is between 18°C and 38°C (64°F–100°F) for optimal drying and performance.
Select appropriate application method. Choose from felt-tipped applicator, gravity feed wipe, knurled roller, sprayer, or similar applicator based on coverage area and component shape.
Apply Adhesion Promoter 4298UV evenly across the bonding area. Use consistent application technique to ensure uniform, complete coverage without bare spots.
Verify coverage with fluorescent dye. The yellow fluorescent dye makes applied promoter clearly visible—inspect the coverage to confirm complete saturation of the bonding surface.
Allow drying time 30–90 seconds. Typical drying ranges from 30 seconds in warm conditions to 90 seconds in cooler environments; exact timing depends on environmental temperature and humidity.
Confirm dryness before tape application. Lightly touch the treated surface to confirm it has dried (no sticky residue) before applying acrylic foam tape.
Apply 3M Acrylic Foam Tape or Acrylic Plus Tape immediately. Once dry, apply the selected tape directly to the primed surface; do not allow extended time between priming and tape application.
Press tape firmly to establish full contact. Apply adequate pressure to ensure the tape bonds completely across all areas.
Allow final cure time. Once tape is applied, allow adequate cure time before subjecting the bonded assembly to stress or temperature extremes.

FAQs
What does the fluorescent dye do, and why is it important?
The fluorescent yellow dye makes the promoter application immediately visible, allowing technicians to confirm complete coverage before tape application. Incomplete coverage results in weak adhesion spots—the dye provides visual quality control to prevent this.
Can I use Adhesion Promoter 4298UV with adhesive tapes other than 3M acrylic foam tapes?
This promoter is specifically formulated for compatibility with 3M Acrylic Foam Tapes and 3M Acrylic Plus Tapes. Compatibility with other tape brands should be confirmed with 3M before application, as different adhesive formulations may have different primer requirements.
If I make a mistake during application, can I correct it without starting over?
Yes. Uncured promoter can be cleaned away using acetone solvent, allowing mistake correction without requiring part replacement. However, once the tape is applied and pressed, removal becomes more difficult.
How long should I wait between applying the promoter and the adhesive tape?
Apply the tape immediately after the promoter dries (30–90 seconds). Extended waiting time is not necessary and may reduce bonding effectiveness, so proceed with tape application as soon as drying is confirmed.
