⚙ Ideal For
- Severe oxidation removal
- Deep scratches and scuffs
- Major boat restoration
- Heavily weathered surfaces
- Gelcoat refinement
✔ Benefits
- Fastest-cutting formula
- Removes heavy oxidation
- Extended working time
- High gloss finish
- No pad clogging
Heavy oxidation, deep scratches, and severe chalking on gelcoat require aggressive cutting that standard light or medium compounds cannot deliver. Attempting to remove major surface damage with lighter formulas requires multiple passes, extending application time and increasing material waste.
3M Heavy Cutting Compound addresses this by providing the fastest-cutting formula in the 3M Perfect-It range, removing oxidation and scratches of P600 or coarser in a single aggressive pass. It leaves a high gloss finish suitable for follow-up polishing or waxing steps in a multi-step gelcoat finishing process.
Key Features
- Removes scratches P600 or coarser — Designed for severe oxidation, deep scratches, scuff marks, and major surface defects. This is the most aggressive cutting formula in the range.
- Fastest-cutting formula — Removes heavy oxidation, weathering, dulling, and chalking more aggressively than Medium or Light compounds.
- Extended wet time — Formula provides longer working time, allowing extended application before requiring fresh material; reduces product waste.
- Leaves a high gloss finish — On many heavily oxidised surfaces, polishing may not be necessary before waxing.
- Does not clog buffing pads — Maintains consistent performance during aggressive application; reduces interruptions for pad maintenance.

Description
This heavy-cutting gelcoat compound is designed for boats, RVs, and marine surfaces with severe oxidation, deep scratches, heavy chalking, or major weathering damage. It's the fastest-cutting formula in the 3M Perfect-It range and is intended as the first step in a multi-step gelcoat finishing process. After heavy cutting, surfaces are typically refined with Medium or Light compounds to achieve final clarity and gloss.
Which 3M Gelcoat Compound Should You Use? Heavy vs. Medium vs. Light
This heavy-cutting compound is formulated for severe oxidation and scratches of P600 or coarser. Use Heavy as the first step for heavily oxidised, chalked, or deeply scratched surfaces. Use Medium (removes scratches P1000 or finer) for moderate oxidation and weathering; use Light (removes scratches P1500 or finer) for final refinement and minor oxidation. The staged approach (Heavy → Medium → Light) is used by professionals for maximum control and professional-grade results.
How to Prepare Gelcoat Before Heavy Buffing
Before applying this compound, wash the gelcoat to remove salt, algae, and loose contamination. While this heavy formula can handle oxidised surfaces, removing loose material improves efficiency. For extremely weathered surfaces, light sanding with P600 sandpaper may improve the initial cutting action.
Recommended Workflow for Different Gelcoat Conditions
For light oxidation or swirls: Use 3M Light Cutting Compound directly; one application provides cutting, polishing, and wax protection.
For moderate oxidation and weathering: Use 3M Medium Cutting Compound; it removes the oxidised layer efficiently without the aggressiveness of Heavy.
For severe oxidation, deep scratches, or chalking: Use this Heavy Cutting Compound first to remove major damage, then follow with Medium to refine, then Light for final clarity and gloss. This staged approach prevents unnecessary material removal and ensures a professional finish.
Application Context and Suitable Surfaces
This compound is suitable for all non-silicone-sensitive gelcoat surfaces including marine vessels, RVs, and industrial equipment. It will not perform on bare wood, unsealed timber, or silicone-sensitive surfaces. Always test on an inconspicuous area first if surface compatibility is uncertain.
Limitations
This product is designed for severe oxidation and deep scratches only. Using Heavy on lightly oxidised surfaces may over-cut and require unnecessary refinement. Do not use on bare wood, unsealed timber, exterior finishes beyond gelcoat, or surfaces that have been stripped with aggressive abrasives. This compound is not suitable as a one-step solution; follow with Medium or Light for refined finishing.
More Information
Application Instructions
- Wash and assess the surface — Use appropriate marine soap and fresh water rinse; assess the severity of oxidation and scratching to confirm Heavy Compound is appropriate.
- Apply compound to polishing pad — Dispense a suitable amount onto a clean wool cutting pad (wool is required for heavy compounds).
- Initial aggressive pass — Using a rotary or orbital polisher, apply the compound with overlapping passes across a section. Use firm pressure and keep the pad moving. Continue until the product breaks down and the heavy cutting action is complete.
- Secondary pass if needed — For extremely severe surfaces, a second pass with fresh compound may be required to remove all major defects.
- Inspect before refinement — Check the surface to ensure all major scratches and oxidation have been removed before proceeding to refinement with Medium Compound.
- Buff off residue — Use a clean microfibre towel to remove all remaining residue, working in straight lines.
- Follow with Medium Compound — For best results, follow heavy cutting with 3M Medium Cutting Compound to refine the surface.
- Follow with Light Compound — For final clarity and gloss, finish with 3M Light Cutting Compound + Wax.
Safety note: Use in well-ventilated areas; wear eye protection; avoid skin contact. Wash immediately if contact occurs. Keep out of reach of children.

FAQs
How do I use Heavy Cutting Compound on my boat?
Apply using a polishing buffer with firm pressure, working in sections until the product breaks down. Heavy Compound removes major damage but leaves the surface ready for refinement. Always follow with Medium Compound to refine, then Light Compound + Wax for final gloss.
What's the difference between Heavy, Medium, and Light cutting compounds?
Heavy removes coarse scratches (P600 or coarser); Medium handles moderate oxidation and scratches (P1000); Light removes fine scratches (P1500). Use Heavy first for severe damage, then Medium for refinement, then Light for final clarity and gloss.
Do I need to use Heavy first, or can I start with Medium?
Use Heavy only if the surface has severe oxidation, deep scratches, or heavy chalking. For moderate damage, start with Medium. Starting with Heavy on lightly oxidised surfaces causes unnecessary over-cutting and material waste.
Can I use Heavy Compound as a one-step solution?
No; Heavy Compound is designed as the first step in a multi-step finishing process. After heavy cutting, follow with Medium Compound to refine the surface, then Light Compound + Wax for final clarity and protection.
