⚙ Ideal For
- Fixing oxidised or chalked gelcoat
- Seasonal boat restoration
- RV surface preparation
- Fleet maintenance
- Non-silicone surfaces
✔ Benefits
- Handles moderate damage
- One-step compound and wax
- Extended working time
- Restores gloss finish
- Reduces application time
Moderate oxidation, weathering, and chalking on older boats reduce gloss and require removal before protective finishing. Separate cutting, polishing, and waxing applications increase labour time and material cost, especially on larger surfaces and fleet maintenance applications.
3M Medium Cutting Compound + Wax addresses this by removing oxidation and scratches of P1000 or finer in a single application. It restores gloss and includes protection, eliminating the need for separate polishing or waxing steps.
Key Features
- Removes scratches P1000 or finer — Handles oxidation, weathering, dulling, chalking, and minor defects. P1000 is suitable for moderate surface damage without the aggression of heavier compounds.
- One-step compound and wax — Combines cutting power and protective wax in a single application, eliminating separate polishing and waxing passes.
- Restores gloss and lustre — Leaves a high gloss wax finish that protects against weathering without requiring additional refinement steps.
- Extended wet time — Formula provides longer working time, allowing extended application before requiring fresh material; reduces product waste.
- Does not clog buffing pads — Maintains consistent performance during application; reduces interruptions for pad maintenance.

Description
This medium-cutting gelcoat compound is designed for boats, RVs, and marine surfaces with moderate oxidation, weathering, or chalking from UV exposure. It's the standard choice in the 3M Perfect-It range for typical restoration work and delivers professional-grade results for seasonal maintenance and pre-sale preparation. The integrated wax finish provides immediate protection without requiring separate waxing, making it ideal for fleet maintenance and high-volume detailing applications.
Which 3M Gelcoat Compound Should You Use? Light vs. Medium vs. Heavy
This medium-cutting compound is formulated for moderate oxidation and scratches of P1000 or finer. Use Medium for typical seasonal maintenance and moderate surface damage. Use Light (removes scratches P1500 or finer) only for final refinement and minor oxidation. Use Heavy (removes scratches P800 or coarser) first if the surface is severely damaged, heavily chalked, or has deep scratches. Many professionals apply Heavy first, then Medium for refinement, then Light for final clarity.
How to Prepare Gelcoat Before Buffing and Polishing
Before applying this compound, wash the gelcoat to remove salt, algae, and contamination. Clean surfaces allow the compound to bond and perform optimally. For weathered surfaces with heavy chalking or oxidation, light sanding improves cutting efficiency and reduces the number of buffing passes required.
Recommended Workflow for Different Gelcoat Conditions
For light oxidation or swirls: Use 3M Light Cutting Compound directly; one application provides cutting, polishing, and wax protection.
For moderate oxidation and weathering: Use this Medium Cutting Compound; it removes the oxidised layer efficiently in a single application.
For severe oxidation, deep scratches, or chalking: Use 3M Heavy Cutting Compound first to remove major damage, then use this Medium formula to refine the finish.
Application and Suitable Surfaces
This compound is suitable for non-silicone-sensitive gelcoat surfaces including marine vessels, RVs, and industrial equipment. It will not perform on bare wood, unsealed timber, or silicone-sensitive surfaces. Always test on an inconspicuous area first if surface compatibility is uncertain.
Limitations
This product is designed for moderate oxidation and weathering only. Severe surface damage, deep scratches, major chalking, or heavily neglected surfaces require a Heavy compound first. Do not use on bare wood, unsealed timber, exterior finishes beyond gelcoat, or surfaces that have been stripped with aggressive abrasives.
More Information
Application Instructions
- Wash and dry the gelcoat — Use appropriate marine soap and fresh water rinse; allow to dry completely before application to ensure optimal compound bonding.
- Apply compound to polishing pad — Dispense a suitable amount onto a clean wool or foam cutting pad (wool is recommended for medium compounds).
- Initial buffing pass — Using a rotary or orbital polisher, apply the compound with overlapping passes across a section. Use moderate to firm pressure and keep the pad moving. Continue until the product breaks down and the cutting action is progressing.
- Final polish pass — Reduce buffing speed and apply lighter pressure to blend and polish the area to a uniform gloss. This creates a smooth finish without swirls.
- Buff off residue — Use a clean microfibre towel to remove all remaining residue, working in straight lines to avoid creating new swirls.
- Inspect work — Check the surface in daylight from multiple angles to ensure complete oxidation removal and even coverage.
- Repeat on remaining sections — Work systematically across the hull or entire vessel, allowing each section to cool if needed.
- Allow cure time — Do not expose the buffed surface to water before the wax layer has fully cured.
Safety note: Use in well-ventilated areas; wear eye protection; avoid skin contact. Wash immediately if contact occurs. Keep out of reach of children.

FAQs
How do I use this gelcoat compound on my boat or RV?
First, wash the surface to remove contamination and dry completely. Apply the compound using a polishing buffer, working in sections with moderate to firm pressure until the product breaks down. Reduce buffing speed and apply lighter pressure for final polishing. Buff off residue with a clean towel and allow the wax to cure before water exposure.
What's the difference between 3M Light, Medium, and Heavy cutting compounds?
Light removes fine scratches (P1500); Medium handles moderate oxidation and scratches (P1000); Heavy tackles severe oxidation and deep scratches (P800 and coarser). For typical seasonal boat restoration and moderate weathering, Medium is the most efficient choice. Use Light for final refinement; use Heavy only for severe damage.
Should I use Medium or Heavy compound?
Use Heavy if the gelcoat is severely oxidised, heavily chalked, or has deep scratches that require aggressive cutting. Use Medium for typical seasonal maintenance, moderate oxidation, and weathering. Many professionals apply Heavy first for major damage, then Medium to refine, then Light for final clarity.
Can I use this on my RV if I'm not sure whether it's silicone-sensitive?
Test the compound on a small, inconspicuous area first. This product is suitable for non-silicone-sensitive surfaces. If the tested area shows adhesion issues or clarity problems, your surface is silicone-sensitive and you should use a silicone-tolerant product instead.
